FP post yesterday made me wonder...
Were panel vans just an Australian thing? I know they were around as workhorse derivatives in Europe in the 50s-70s, but not really as a youth cult. Did pickup-based shaggin wagons exist anywhere else?

Some say the van craze started in American in the 70s. Shag carpets, waterbeds, custom-shaped windows, radical paint schemes, etc. I wouldn't mind rocking one if I could shove a modern aluminum V8 and 7-speed auto under it.
Edit: I guess you could say they're truck-based since the Ram Van and Ford Econoline were based of the Dodge Ram and Ford F-series, respectively.
